Announcing a New Fellowship Opportunity in Pediatric MedTech and Data Science

The Consortium for Technology & Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP), an FDA-funded pediatric medical device accelerator centered at Lurie Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, is pleased to announce a partnership with CobiCure to establish The CobiCure Fellowship for MedTech Innovation. The goals of the fellowship are to:

  • Foster knowledge, understanding, and expertise in pediatric MedTech innovation.
  • Grow the community of professionals who are trained in the area of pediatric MedTech.
  • Develop MedTech solutions that meet the custom needs of children.

Fellows will spend 12 months embedded within the CTIP team at Lurie Children’s, engaged in the following activities:

  1. Design and develop a Fellow Project, which will be needs-based, related to a medical device, medical device component or technology innovation, have commercial merit, and preferably have a clinical focus on cardiovascular and/or critical care.
  2. Participate in CTIP’s activities as a MedTech accelerator, learning how to evaluate and support early stage pediatric medical device companies, including developing long term strategies and roadmaps.
  3. Collaborate with the CTIP Medical Device Clinical Trials Unit staff at Lurie to learn how to plan MedTech Clinical trials, develop protocols, and address clinical trials regulatory compliance.
  4. Participate in learning, networking, and presentation opportunities with CobiCure and the other CobiCure Fellows at other institutions.
  5. Complete self-paced learning modules in human-centered design, biodesign, medical device regulation, and other related topics.

The CobiCure Fellow at Lurie will have a focus on data science and AI/ML applications in medical devices. We are specifically interested in fellows who already have technical skills in these areas who are looking to accelerate their careers into healthcare and MedTech innovation. The Fellow will be under the direct supervision and mentorship of Dr. Juan Espinoza, CTIP Director, Chief Research Informatics Officer at Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Associate Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Northwestern University. Fellows will receive mentorship, education, and collaboration from several areas across Lurie Children’s, including:

  • The Data Science and Analytics Core at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute
  • The Innovate2Impact (I2I) Program (Lurie’s Tech Transfer and Commercialization Office)
  • The Lurie Children’s Heart Institute
  • The Lurie Children’s Division of Critical Care Medicine
  • Research and project support from Dr. Espinoza’s lab
  • The Division of Health & Biomedical Informatics at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

About Cobicure

CobiCure is a non-profit pediatric organization, part of Advancium Health Network, focused on reimagining pediatric medical technology through its strategic ecosystem, critical resources, leadership and funding.  We aim to ensure that return on investment is not a determinant for bringing life-changing pediatric medical technologies to children.  For more information on how CobiCure is driving change, visit: cobicuremedtech.org

About CTIP

The Consortium for Technology & Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP) is a pediatric medical device accelerator based at Lurie Children’s Hospital and Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Established in 2011 and first funded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Pediatric Device Consortia (PDC) grant program in 2013, CTIP promotes the commercialization and clinical use of pediatric medical device technology. CTIP has since received PDC awards in 2018 and again in 2023 to continue research and development of MedTech for children (Grant Number: P50FD007963, PI: Espinoza). CTIP addresses the most important component missing from pediatric device innovation: simultaneously engaging clinicians, engineers, regulators, hospital administrators, patients and the business community in the process of assessment and development of technology. CTIP’s network of children’s hospitals, academic institutions, accelerators, and incubators includes 26 organizations across 8 states.
