CTIP + KidsX Announce Winners for Inaugural MedTech Innovation Challenge

CHICAGO, IL – [MARCH 13, 2025] – The Consortium for Technology & Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP) and KidsX are excited to announce the winners of the Inaugural MedTech Innovation Challenge.

The MedTech Innovation Challenge provides a platform for hospital staff and faculty innovators to receive support on early-stage projects addressing critical gaps in pediatric health care. Applications spanned various development stages, from concept to advanced prototypes, and covered FDA device classifications, including Class I, II, and combination products. Applications were received from more than 10 hospitals and healthcare organizations across the United States and internationally.

The Innovation Challenge winners are as follows:

Pediatric Oxygen Cart

Intermountain Health

Developed by Phil and Emily Bassett in conjunction with Cody Backus from the Intermountain Health Caregiver Invention Lab, the Pediatric Oxygen Tank Cart provides a lightweight and child-friendly alternative to traditional oxygen tanks. The current prototypes aim to improve mobility and independence for pediatric patients, helping them engage in daily activities with greater ease. This innovation enhances the quality of life for children who require supplemental oxygen while reducing logistical and social burdens on families.

“The CTIP + KidsX MedTech Innovation Challenge Bootcamp was the perfect setting to learn foundational business principles in the pediatric medical device space,” said Cody Backus. “The speakers and presenters were of the highest quality and were perfectly relevant. The connections made and lessons learned will be paramount in our quest to improve the lives of our patients.”

CleanSpray

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute

Led by Dr. Seth Goldstein of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and its research enterprise, Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute, CleanSpray is a novel device aimed at reducing post-operative infections in children undergoing contaminated minimally invasive surgeries. The innovation delivers an antiseptic mist directly to infected surgical sites, addressing high rates of intra-abdominal abscesses that can lead to prolonged hospital stays and additional interventions. By refining the user experience and workflow, CleanSpray has the potential to significantly improve surgical outcomes and patient recovery times.

"The innovation challenge bootcamp provided valuable insights to enhance our infection-control technology for pediatric care,” said Dr. Seth Goldstein. “We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with experts committed to improving patient safety."

“CTIP is proud to welcome Pediatric Oxygen Cart and CleanSpray into our portfolio,” said Bianca Riello, Program Associate, Network and Partnerships at CTIP. “Both of these innovations exemplify the spirit of the MedTech Innovation Challenge by tackling real-world pediatric healthcare challenges with creative and scalable solutions. We are excited to support their development and commercialization journey.”
