Following residency in Pediatrics Dr. Pineda completed training in Pediatric Critical Care including research training at Duke University’s Multidisciplinary Neuroprotection Laboratory. He then joined the faculty at the Department of Pediatrics and the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida where he conducted bench and clinical research in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Dr. Pineda was then recruited to Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital where he established one of the first funded Pediatric Neurocritical Care programs in the United States.

More recently he joined Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. In parallel to the development of robust clinical expertise Dr. Pineda has successfully conducted research on biomarkers of TBI, development of new technologies for monitoring and treatment of critically ill children, and Implementation Science.  His research experience includes participation in NIH trials serving as principal and site investigator, steering committee member, Data and Safety Monitoring Board Chair and member of study sections at NINDS and NICHD. Dr. Pineda served as founding Chair of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group, an international group of over 40 institutions dedicated to advancing clinical research for children with critical neurological illnesses. Dr. Pineda has a track record conducting impactful research addressing pediatric ICU patients whose care is complex, involves multiple disciplines, varied sources of information, numerous activities and transitions of care. His current research and implementation efforts focus on validation of decision support systems and biomarkers that enable evidence based Neurocritical Care and on our Human-System Integration and Implementation Program (HSIIP).
